What's Growing on Hen and Drake Farm - Week 41

Nearly everything has been harvested and most of the garden plants have been pulled up and put on the compost pile. All that's left is to do is pick a couple of squash, do some end of season weeding and top the beds with compost. Now that the garden is done for the year (other than a few winter crops), my next several posts will be about things I've learned this year. I've been a gardener for years, but I still learn new things each season (mostly what not to do, lol!)

Here is the garden this week

200 cloves of garlic have been planted

The remaining basil was harvested. I had enough to make 3 1/2 cups of pesto. Divided among half cup jars and topped with olive oil, it is waiting in the freezer to add a burst of flavor to paninis, pasta and pizzas over the winter

The tomatoes that I brought in last week are getting used up as they ripen. This Ananas Noire here tastes as amazing as it looks

Some Fall mums add color to my front porch

The greenhouse gets so messy over the summer as it gets used for storage, brooding poultry and drying seeds. So, I  cleaned it up and now have it ready to start next year's plants

I moved the hot peppers into the greenhouse to finish ripening

As they ripen, the reapers will go into batches of my pineapple reaper sauce

Weekly harvest total

5 ounces basil
3 ounces peppers
2 pounds 5 ounces sweet potatoes
1 pound 7 ounces eggplant
2 pounds 15 ounces zucchini
3 pounds 4 ounces tomatoes
14 pounds 1 ounce melons
16 pounds tomatillos
3 pounds 6 ounces squash

Yearly total

496 pounds 5 ounces

    1. Here you go

      1 - 20 ounce can crushed pineapple
2 Carolina Reaper peppers, stems removed
      1/2 an onion, coarsely chopped
      3 cloves garlic
      1/2 teaspoon cumin
      3/4 teaspoon salt
      1/3 cup cider vinegar

Combine ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer 15 minutes. Move to a blender and puree. For a smoother sauce, pass puree through a food mill or fine mesh sieve.
      Enjoy!
