What's Growing on Hen and Drake Farm - Week 8

Lots of activity on the farm this week. I started Genovese basil, Italian parsley, marjoram, Verde tomatillos and loads of tomatoes (100+ seeds) in the greenhouse. This year I am growing 16 heirloom/open pollinated and 2 hybrid varieties of tomato

Tomatoes I'm growing this year:

Aleko - This is a new variety for me. I received the seeds last year from a gardening friend. It is supposed to be a large beefsteak variety with few seeds

Ananas Noire - Very large, multi colored (green, yellow and pink) variety with rich, sweet flavor. Very productive

Beauty King - Very attractive, medium, red and yellow striped variety with good, sweet flavor

Black Prince - A new variety for me, received from another gardening friend. Here is a description from Baker Creek .
An heirloom from Irkutsk, Siberia. The 2- to 5-oz. fruits vary in shape from round to plum- or heart-shaped; the color is a wonderful deep blackish-chocolate brown. The flavor is as deep, sweet and rich as the color.

Carbon - Large, the darkest of the black varieties, with a sweet, rich flavor

Caspian Pink - Large, pink beefsteak variety with a flavor that rivals Brandywine, but bears better in cooler climates

Dr Wyche's Yellow - Named after Dr. Wyche, of the Cole Brothers circus, who supposedly fertilized his garden with manure from the zoo's elephants. Very large, golden yellow variety. Rich flavor with hints of tropical fruit. Very productive

Giant Belgium - Huge, dark pink variety. Super sweet, rich and meaty with few seeds

Gold Rush Currant - Tiny golden variety with rich sweet flavor

Greek Witness - Originally given to an Australian gardener by his Greek neighbor who is one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She brought the seeds with her, from Greece, when she immigrated to Australia. Large, red beefsteak with sweet, rich flavor and few seeds

Honeybunch - Small, red variety. Very sweet

Japanese Black Trifle - Medium, pear shaped, black variety with green shoulders. Flavor is rich and complex with smoky undertones. Very productive

Large Barred Boar - Medium, pink-brown with metallic green stripes. Intense flavor when fully ripe, reminiscent of tomato paste

Mystery Tomato - Golf ball sized, red tomato with good flavor. I discovered this tomato last summer growing outside the kitchen door of an old Mexican restaurant that was being converted into a dentist's office.

Omar's Lebanese - Very large, pink variety from Lebanon. Sweet and flavorful

Orange Pear - An open pollinated cherry tomato that I've spent six years developing. Small, pear shaped, orange variety that is mild and sweet with hints of tropical fruit. Very crack resistant

Rose - Large, dusty pink variety with rich sweet flavor said to rival Brandywine

Sunsugar - Small, golden orange with a super sweet yet tangy real "tomato" flavor

There are fat buds on my shiro plum tree and blueberry bushes.
