August Garden Totals and Beet Berry Sorbet

In August I saw my largest harvest totals that I'm likely to see this year. This year has been unusual since my largest totals typically come in September. But, with an early spring and the warmest average temperatures in 125 years, everything has been ready early.

Here is what I picked this month:

57 pounds 10 1/4 ounces cucumbers
144 pounds tomatoes
61 pounds 5 ounces zucchini
1 pound 5 3/4 ounces eggplant
5 pounds 10 1/2 ounces green beans
8 ounces blueberries
9 1/2 ounces leeks
6 ounces dried beans
252 pounds plums
49 pounds 8 ounces potatoes
22 pounds 1 1/2 ounces onions
14 pounds peaches
1 pound 4 ounces carrots
8 pounds 10 ounces peppers
3 3/4 ounces swiss chard
6 pounds 14 1/4 ounces watermelon

Month total: 624 pounds 13 1/2 ounces

Year total: 895 pounds 13 1/2 ounces

Beet Berry Sorbet

1 cup each fresh or frozen blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries
2 medium beets, scrubbed and chopped
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water

Combine ingredients in a medium pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until beets are very tender.
Remove from heat and cool for 20 minutes.
Press mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Discard solids. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours.
Pour into an ice cream machine and process according to your machines directions.
