Which Chicken Breed is Right For Me?
More and more people are becoming conscious of where their food comes from and how it affects their health and are striving for sustainability. Many now grow at least a portion of their food and are adding small flocks of chickens to their back yards. With this though comes the inevitable question... What kind of chickens should I get? Well, that depends on what your goals are. Are you looking strictly for egg production? Meat? Pets? What is your environment like? Hot? Cold? Here are my 10 recommended breeds for eggs.
Black Australorp - Excellent producer of medium to large brown eggs. Docile, friendly. Tends toward broodiness. Very cold hardy.
Delaware - Excellent producer of large brown eggs. Occasionally broody. Cold and heat hardy.
Leghorn - Excellent producer of large white eggs. Skittish. Heat tolerant.
Sex Link - Excellent producer of large brown eggs. Usually calm. Cold hardy.
Rhode Island Red - Excellent producer of large brown eggs. Docile. Heat and cold hardy.
Ameraucana a.k.a Easter Egger - Good producer of large eggs in varying shades of blue, green and pink. Calm. Very cold hardy.
Plymouth Rock - Good producer of large brown eggs. Occasionally broody. Very cold hardy.
Welsummer - Good producer of large dark brown eggs. Calm. Cold hardy.
